Taliban local leader killed in S. Afghan district: NATO

Afghan and NATO-led troops during a joint operation in Helmand province, 555 km south of Afghan capital Kabul, eliminated a suspected Taliban local leader on Monday, a press release of the military alliance said Tuesday.

"A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, yesterday and killed him," it said.

Without identifying his name, the press release added that "an individual armed with an AK-47 assault rifle displayed hostile intent toward the security force during the operation. Assessing an immediate threat, the security force fired, killing the individual."

"The leader directs the placement of roadside bombs and plans attacks against coalition forces," it added.

Taliban militants fighting Afghan and NATO-led troops in Afghanistan have yet to make comment.
