Azerbaijani president meets U.S. official on energy cooperation

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday met a U.S. special envoy on bilateral relations and energy cooperation.

Richard Morningstar, a special envoy of the U.S. secretary of state, welcomed the Azerbaijan-Turkey agreement on energy cooperation, saying "the United States backs every pipeline project within the framework of the South Gas Corridor."

Morningstar was a promoter of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline project, which could transport gas from Central Asia to Europe. The project is expected to be up and running in 2016.

The South Gas Corridor is a priority EU energy project aimed at diversifying energy supply sources to increase EU energy security.
