NATO probes raids near Afghan-Pakistan border
The NATO-led ISAF on Saturday said it has initiated an investigation into an incident near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border earlier on Saturday that resulted in the killing and injuring of a number of Pakistani security forces.
"The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is investigating an incident that occurred early this morning along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border," the ISAF said in a statement.
"This incident has my highest personal attention and my commitment to thoroughly investigating it to determine the facts," General John R. Allen, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, said in the statement.
"My most sincere and personal heartfelt condolences go out to the families and loved ones of any members of Pakistan Security Forces who may have been killed or injured." Allen said.
The ISAF leadership remains committed to improving security relations with Pakistan, including coordination of operations along border regions in their united fight against terrorism, according to the statement.
According to local media reports, at least 25 Pakistan security forces were killed and over a dozen were injured when NATO helicopters carried out an airstrike on a Pakistani army check post in northwest Mohmmand Agency, a tribal area in northwest Pakistan, in the wee hours Saturday.
