Man convicted of three murders in Georgia's first-ever jury trial

Man convicted of three murders in Georgia's first-ever jury trial
The panel hearing Georgia's first-ever jury trial has convicted a man in the 1994 murders of three people.

The verdict against Revaz Demetrashvili was returned late Thursday after the 12 jurors deliberated after hearing evidence presented by prosecutors and defense attorneys during the trial.

The trial, which began Nov. 9 in Tbilisi city court, caught the attention of the legal community and general public as the South Caucasus country changes to jury trials in criminal cases.

Georgia has been reforming its justice system with a move away from bench trials.

A recent survey showed that 72 percent of the 2,765 Georgians queried trust in the country's justice system, compared to 35 percent in a similar survey in 2005.
